Ninety minutes down the coast road from Muscat. Park at the wadi mouth, take the boatman across the first pool, walk three quarters of an hour up the gorge to water cold enough to be a shock, and stop at the sinkhole on the way home.
Muscat is low, white, and longer than it looks.
The capital runs forty kilometres along the coast, so a city day is really a drive: Mutrah’s corniche and souq at one end, the opera house and the museums in the middle, and the Daymaniyat boats going out from Seeb before the wind gets up.
Three things Oman does that its neighbours do not.
Gulf coastlines look alike from a plane. A reef the government closes for nesting turtles, mountain water that never stops running, and a canyon ledge you can walk belong to Oman alone.
The Daymaniyat Reef
Nine islands and the reef between them are a nature reserve, and the rules are enforced: boats carry a permit, and the islands themselves shut to landing through the summer while green and hawksbill turtles nest. The snorkelling runs all year — you go in off the boat rather than off a beach, over coral in ten metres of clear water, and the turtles carry on regardless.

The Wadis That Keep Running
Rain lands on the Hajar mountains and comes back out months later at the bottom of the gorges, which is why Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid hold swimmable water in a country that averages about a hundred millimetres a year. The falaj channels that still irrigate Nizwa and Birkat Al Mouz run off the same system and have done for well over a thousand years.

The Balcony Walk
Oman’s highest mountain has a ledge cut into the wall of Wadi Ghul: a couple of hours out along the drop, the same back, ending at a village left empty above a thousand metres of air. No railing, no ticket office. The road up is graded but the last stretch wants a 4x4, which is why most people arrive in someone else’s.

Khasab is easier to reach from Dubai than from Muscat.
The Musandam peninsula is separated from the rest of Oman by Emirati territory, so the dhows leaving Khasab fill up with people who drove down the coast that morning. What they come for is the water: bare rock dropping straight into it, dolphins alongside the boat, and a snorkel stop off Telegraph Island.
When Muscat sits at 45°C, go up or get in the water.
June to September the coast is heat plus humidity, and there are only two answers: altitude or water. Jebel Akhdar is two thousand metres up and runs ten to fifteen degrees cooler. The wadis stay cold in the shade all summer. And a thousand kilometres south, Salalah spends those exact months green and drizzling under the khareef.
Salalah keeps its own weather, and it is not Oman’s.
A thousand kilometres and a two-hour flight from Muscat, Dhofar catches the edge of the Indian Ocean monsoon. From late June the hills behind the city turn green, the waterfalls at Wadi Darbat run, and it sits in the twenties while the north bakes. Outside khareef it goes back to a hot coastal town with frankincense trees and very good beaches.

Four things about Oman that get decided before you land.
Most of the country can be arranged from a Muscat hotel lobby the night before. These four cannot: a reserve permit, a land border, a vehicle rule and a season decide them for you.

The interior is fort country: Nizwa’s round tower over the souq, Bahla’s mud walls and their UNESCO listing, the painted ceilings at Jabreen, Nakhal on its rock above the hot spring. Al Hamra and Misfat Al Abriyeen below Jebel Shams are villages people live in, with the falaj still running through the date terraces.
In Muscat, the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque opens to visitors on most mornings outside prayer times. It is a working mosque: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, and a headscarf for women.
